Instructions: Now that your group has decided on an issue, you must demonstrate that there is a problem. You will turn in this research sheet completed with two articles attached that you showed that there is a problem
I. There is a problem in society today. That problem is:
The drinking age is too high, if you can be drafted and go to war at age 18, you should be able to drink at age 18. Also, it would stop a lot of arrests made for underage drinking and save a lot of state money by lowering the arrests made each year. Finally, the government could tax alcohol just a little bit more so then they'd make more money because a lot more people would be buying alcohol.
II. Facts that demonstrate that there is a problem are: (Two articles and bibliography must be attached) The Government rose the drinking age to 21 from 18 in the 1980's because they believed it would reduce the number of highway accidents caused due to younger adults drinking and driving. In fact, the amount of underage students excessively drinking and binge drinking has increased quite a bit and the number of accidents has not really changed at all. It is just like the prohibition when drinking for all ages was illegal; the students want to drink because they know they aren't allowed to. Not only is the drinking underage bad, but they are drinking irresponsibly. The only time you get educated about alcohol is after you have been arrested for a DUI or for public intoxication. This is too late for many kids who die from alcohol poisoning because they weren't educated. Police can't even keep up with kids on college campuses because so many of them are underage drinking. If the age was lowered, police would be able to worry more about real problems such as gang activities or murders. However, students really do need to be educated on how to drink because it could save their lives, and not only after they have been caught.
